Check out the Lighthouse Catholic Media display rack in the back of Holy Family and Sacred Heart.

It contains audio CD’s on many topics of our Catholic Faith.  Listen to them as you drive or even while you exercise.  The suggested donation is just $3.00 per CD. The display is currently at Sacred Heart but will soon move to Holy Family and Our Lady of Lourdes.

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

note: Father Frank had written a few spiritual reflections in advance before he knew he was leaving.  We are sharing them with you.

Father Hector's spiritual refection appears afterwards.

Immediately her flow of blood dried up.

We are made of flesh and blood.  In the second story of Creation from the Book of Genesis, we are told that “The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.” [Gen 2:7]

Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician born circa. 560 B.C. categorized four basic humors or fluids [yellow bile, black bile, phlegm, blood] that circulated through the body.  Illness was a result of an imbalance in any one or several of these humors inside the body.  Another Greek by the name of Democritus once asked:  [What] is the cause of these distempers, vanities and follies, which are the burden of all creatures?

In today’s Gospel, the woman who suffered hemorrhages for twelve years and who suffered under the care of her doctors and spent all she had grew worse as time spent.  Why?  Hemorrhage comes from a Greek word meaning “to break forth”.  It is a “free and forceful escape of blood” in the body, internally or externally.  She suffered from an imbalance —literally an unstoppable flow of blood.  Medical doctors observe that the most dangerous thing about a hemorrhage is that the person may not feel it happening.  A person can literally bleed to death and not even know that they are dying.

We are told that this woman hears about Jesus and catches sight of Him in a crowd and thinks:  If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured.” [Mark 5:28]  She touches Jesus’ cloak and “Immediately her flow of blood dried up.  She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.”   One can speculate as to what her affliction really was; that is, what the real cause of her hemorrhaging may have been.  In the spiritual life, many things can cause hemorrhaging of grace from the soul:  anger, avarice, covetousness, envy, gluttony, lust, pride.  These sins are deadly because without confession [the telling of our sins to a priest], contrition [sorrow for our sins], satisfaction [doing the required penance] and absolution [forgiveness from God through the priest], they relentlessly weaken and wound the soul and eventually kill it!

Jesus did not get upset when He felt that power had gone out of Him at the moment that the woman touched His cloak.  Rather, he asked “Who touched me?”

In other words, who is asking for my Mercy?  Jesus, the Divine Physician answered:  “Daughter, your faith has saved you.  Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.”

Whoever asks for His Mercy immediately receives unmerited grace; it is freely given in the sacraments of healing instituted by Christ Jesus.  When was the last time you went to the Divine Physician for a spiritual physical?  If it has been awhile, best to have a complete check up—internal hemorrhages are just as fatal as external ones.

In Christ, Fr. Frank

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

Thank you very much for the wonderful welcoming event last week. The food was excellent, but the fellowship was even better. I look forward to being your priest at the three parishes. May the Lord give you peace and joy as you continue to serve him in faith, hope and love.

Sincerely yours,

Fr. Hector
